Ultracentrifuge
Model: Optima L-100K, Beckman Coulter; CS150NX Benchtop, Hitachi
Principle
An ultracentrifuge separates suspended particles or macromolecules according to their sizes, shapes and density. The centrifuge works on the principle of sedimentation, where the acceleration in centripetal force causes denser substances to separate out along the radial direction at the bottom of the tube. The rotors in an ultracentrifuge spin under vacuum which helps in eliminating air resistance and enabling exact temperature control.
Application
It can be used to separate and purify proteins, lipoproteins, cell organelles, DNA and RNA, and carbon nanotubes.
