Area of works:

Clinical Immunology and comprehensive Immunophenotyping.

Leading Flowcytometry core facility.

Research Interest:

  • Next generation influenza vaccine innovation.
  • Comprehensive Immunophenotyping in Healthy Individuals vs Disease Conditions to measure status of immune response

Research Work Areas Summary:

1. Indo-European Consortium for Next Generation Influenza Vaccine Innovation (INCENTIVE): Immunogenicity, molecular profiling and safety of a marketed quadrivalent influenza vaccine. QIV Phase IV trial plans to assess to assess immunogenicity in 3 different age groups (elderly, infants and children) with the quadrivalent commercially available influenza vaccine, with reporting of gender-disaggregated data and sub-analyses to better understand differences in the responses to the vaccine in terms of gender. The parallel trial in India and Europe will allow comparison in immune response over the continents. The parallel trial in India and Europe will allow comparison in immune response over the continents. Immune response will cover the traditional immunogenicity as well as more in depth analysis of the immune profile, including in depth analysis of antibodies and their effector functions and cell-mediated immunity.

2. Infection and Immunology: Viral Immunology: SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOCs) have threatened COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness. We aimed to assess the effectiveness of the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine, predominantly against the delta (B.1.617.2) variant, in addition to the cellular immune response to vaccination (Lancet Infect Dis. 2021). Identification of the Immune-correlates of protection in SARS-CoV-2 infected Indian patients.

3. Human Neonatal Biology (Immunophenotyping/ Flowcytometry): Our approaches involved immunophenotypic characterization of umbilical cord blood cells in full-term appropriate and small for gestational age neonates using well standardize flowcytometry method. In our efforts to correlates the frequency of immune cells including T cells, B cells, NK cells, monocytes, neutrophils and dendritic cells and subsets of most of cell types with the birth weight and gestational age of babies.  Another approach to evaluate the immune cells indian neonates with overseas and identified the cellular composition of Indian and USA neonates.

4. Hemolytic Disease (Hematological disorders): One of collaborative approach as working on circulating monocytes (CD14+) develop a highly pro-inflammatory (CD14+CD16hi) and procoagulant phenotype when they engulf Hb-activated platelets, and are abundant in patients of PNH and SCD. These cells upon engulfment of Hb-activated platelets, monocytes differentiate into M1- macrophages.
